Counselling for healing, perspective and taking control

Glenda has worked as a psychologist since 1978. With an initial background in Educational Psychology, Glenda’s professional focus has evolved and now concentrates on psychological counselling.

Glenda has worked in private practice since 1989. Glenda has previously worked with the Melbourne Holistic Health Group, including at the former location in Delbridge Street, North Fitzroy.

Glenda uses a broad-based counselling approach to help her clients achieve and maintain optimal psychological health and wellbeing. Her approach draws from a wide field of Eastern and Western psychological knowledge, educational theory and philosophy. The development of Glenda’s counselling synthesis has been particularly influenced by the findings of her client-based Master of Education research. This research has particular implications for working with loss and grief. It also has implications for the significant role of positive psychological qualities and strengths such as hope, inspiration and creativity in the counselling process.

Glenda has publicly discussed her Master of Education work and the implications of this for counselling practice. In 2003 she presented a lecture at the C.G. Jung Society of Melbourne entitled, “Seeing past the dark…a personal mandala journey”. Glenda has also been a guest presenter for the Diploma of Holistic Counselling Practice course at the Phoenix Institute, Melbourne.

Over many years, Glenda has applied and refined the insights of her research through developing courses for the general public focusing on practical ways of promoting optimal psychological wellbeing and fulfillment in life. These courses have been conducted at a variety of adult and further education institutions. Examples of these courses include: Generosity, Courage, Joy, and Self-Awareness Through Art. One of Glenda’s courses, “The Mandala … Drawing towards Wholeness”, is acknowledged in Ms. Robyn Vickers-Willis’ book (2002, 2008) “Navigating Mid-life: Women Becoming Themselves”. Also, Dr. Bernie Neville in his book (2010) co-authored with Tim Dalmau, “Olympus Inc.: Intervening for Cultural Change in Organisations”, acknowledges his use of an exercise developed by Glenda as a consequence of her research.

Glenda uses her approach to help people address a range of concerns and issues such as:

  • Improving self-confidence and self-esteem
  • Relaxation therapy
  • Anxiety
  • Grief and loss
  • Stress management
  • Work-related stress
  • Life transition
  • Changing unhelpful lifestyle habits
  • Weight management
  • Creativity in mid-life and beyond
  • Emotional resilience and wellbeing in ageing

Glenda uses Mindfulness as well as Cognitive Behavioural techniques that incorporate the use of mental imagery. She also draws upon Creative Arts Therapy and the framework of Psychosynthesis.

Glenda is particularly interested not only in helping people to address psychological difficulties and life challenges but also in helping people to understand how to remain confident and proactive in the ongoing management of their psychological wellbeing and of the promotion of fulfillment in life.

Glenda’s broad, evidence-based, collaborative and optimistic approach has much congruence with more recently formulated branches of psychology such as Positive Psychology and its complementary field, Coaching Psychology.

Glenda has a commitment to her ongoing professional development. Recent courses that she has attended include:

  • Focussed psychological strategies. Integrating relaxation therapy with CBT in the counselling process (2011)
