Warming Cold & Flu Drink

Published in Recipes on 01 July 2011 by Melbourne Holistic Health Group

This is a great recipe to keep on-hand to be used at the first sign of a cold or flu. It can be used to induce a sweat to reduce the severity and duration of an infection (not to be used by pregnant or breast feeding women).

Ingredients
  • 1 chilli chopped finely, seeds removed
  • Piece of ginger 3cms long, grated
  • 2 cloves garlic, crushed
  • 1 lemon’s grated rind
  • 1 lemon’s juice
  • 1 tablespoon of honey
  • 2 cups water
  • Juice of one lemon
You will need
  • 1 stainless steel or ceramic saucepan (small-medium sized)
  • 1 tea strainer or something similar
  • 1 thermos (insulated vacuum flask)
Instructions

Add to a saucepan the following ingredients – chilli, ginger, garlic, lemon rind and the two cups of water. Simmer for 2-3 minutes and allow the liquid to cool for 10 minutes then add the lemon juice and the tablespoon of honey.

Mix to melt the honey. Using a strainer, separate the liquid from the solids. Store the liquid in a thermos to keep warm. Please note that the thermos won’t be able to be used for other drinks after this one, so use an old one if available.

Sip during the day when you have a cold or influenza.
